A devastating accident on Tuesday morning at the old toll gate area of the Lagos–Abeokuta expressway in Ogun State left six people dead and several others injured.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that the incident occurred around 8:00 a.m., when a Mack tanker truck carrying vegetable oil lost control due to brake failure.
According to Afolabi Odunsi, public education officer of the Ogun Sector Command, the truck collided with two vehicles and pedestrians in the busy toll gate zone.
“Six adults—five men and one woman—were killed, and two men sustained injuries,” Odunsi said.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, while the deceased were deposited at Ifo General Hospital morgue.
Local authorities reacted swiftly. Wasiu Lawal, Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, ordered the removal of roadside traders in the area to prevent future accidents.
“We are committed to ensuring safety along this high-risk corridor in collaboration with FRSC and other security agencies,” he said.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency spokesperson noted that the truck driver fled the scene.
He identified the vehicles involved as a Mack truck (EKY 913 YH), a Suzuki minibus (SMK 16 YK), and a tricycle (AAA 840 QM), attributing the crash to excessive speed.
Akinwunmi Fasakin, Sector Commander of the FRSC, urged all drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles, to conduct thorough mechanical checks before embarking on trips.
The Ogun State Police also launched an investigation, according to Omolola Odutola, Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command.
She added, “Several victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ota. Sadly, six did not survive, and others are receiving treatment. The police extend condolences to the families of the deceased.”
