The Cross River Police Command has arrested Okoi Obono-Obla, former special assistant to the president on prosecution, over allegations of forgery.
In a statement, Eitokpah Sunday, Cross River police spokesperson, said Obono-Obla was “lawfully arrested” on Thursday at Abuja Park, Ugep, following a petition to the state commissioner of police.
“The arrest was effected in accordance with extant laws and the statutory powers of the Nigeria Police Force to investigate allegations of criminal conduct,” he added.
Obono-Obla was taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, where investigations are ongoing. Sunday confirmed that his legal counsel and relatives have been notified, dismissing claims that the former aide was kidnapped.
“Allegations of kidnapping or involvement of unidentified security outfits are false, unfounded, and entirely without factual basis,” he said.
Obono-Obla previously served as chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP).
He faced multiple investigations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged falsification of records and financial impropriety, including arrests in 2020 and re-arraignments in 2021 over alleged fraud and certificate forgery.
