The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 489 kilograms of cannabis sativa in Lagos.

Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, The Commander of NNS BEECROFT disclosed on Friday that the seizure was made on Wednesday night around Abule Osun in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State.

According to him, the patrol team acted on credible intelligence before swooping on the smugglers.

“The perpetrators abandoned the illegal items and are currently on the run, but we are tracking them. We have an idea of their location, and they will soon be arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities,” he said.

Adams-Aliu confirmed that the narcotics have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.

He stated that his leadership priority is to reposition NNS BEECROFT to effectively secure Lagos waterways and adjoining maritime corridors.

The commander added that the effort aligns with the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to build a more agile and professional navy capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“Crimes that originate on land and extend to the sea always return to land. We will deal decisively with perpetrators who continue their illegal activities,” Adams-Aliu warned.

Receiving the seized drugs, Deputy Controller of Narcotics in Festac Town, Gbenga Adejumo, described the Nigerian Navy as a key partner in the fight against drug trafficking.

He explained that confiscated narcotics are destroyed by burning after obtaining a court order.

“We conduct the burning far from residential areas to prevent health risks. While the agency is working towards a safer alternative, this remains the approved method,” Adejumo said.
