Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is optimistic that the Super Eagles will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Osasu Obiayuwana, England-based Nigerian sports journalist in Casablanca, Morocco, Gusau relayed his optimism about the Super Eagles despite their position on the 2026 World Cup qualification table.

The Super Eagles are in a precarious situation as regards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled for the United States (US), Canada and Mexico, having started the campaign on a disappointing note.

As things stand, Nigeria’s hopes of playing in the tournament are shaky with the Super Eagles currently placed fourth in their 2026 World Cup qualification group after six matches.

Nigeria has seven points after securing just one win, four draws and losing 2-1 to Benin Republic who alongside Rwanda have eight points while South Africa lead the group standings with 13 points.

With four more games to be played by each country in the group, Gusau believes that the Super Eagles who have failed to win a match at home in this qualification series will resurrect their campaign and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

On how Nigeria ended up in this very unpleasant situation, Gusau said: “Well, I don’t know what you mean by that. All I know is that we are doing our best, to make sure that we prepare the team.

“And by the grace of God, even though we have not won a match at home, we have not lost a match also. We still have matches to play at home.

“I want to assure you that by the grace of God, we are going to win the remaining matches at home and even away. I still have the belief that we are going to be in the USA, Mexico and Canada.”
