John Tsoho, the Federal High Court (FHC) Chief Judge has reassigned two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.
The cases were returned to the chief judge by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who recused himself on February 12 citing personal reasons and the interest of justice. The new trial date is set for February 27.
The suits include a multi-billion naira asset forfeiture case involving 57 properties across Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna, as well as an N8.7 billion money laundering charge against Malami, his wife Hajia Asabe Bashir, and their son Abdulaziz.
During the vacation period, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the interim forfeiture of the 57 properties to the Federal Government following an ex-parte application by EFCC.
The commission was directed to publish the order for interested parties to show cause why the properties should not be permanently forfeited.
Malami has challenged the civil suit, claiming the interim order was obtained through misrepresentation and suppression of facts.
He said that the proceedings threaten his fundamental right to property, presumption of innocence, and family peace.
The ex-AGF, his wife, and son were arraigned on December 30, 2025, on 16 counts of money laundering. They initially pleaded not guilty and were granted N500 million bail each with two sureties.
Malami and his son were later re-arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged terrorism charges, also scheduled to commence trial on February 27 before Justice Abdulmalik.
