Clement Yunana, a senior police officer in Gombe State has died in a hit-and-run accident which occurred on Wednesday.
Yunana who was an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was attached to the Railway Police Outstation in Bajoga, Gombe State.
The accident which saw the 50-year-old Yunana lose his life, according to a report, occurred around 5 pm on Wednesday near the Matrix Filling Station in Tumfure area of the state capital.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that ASP Yunana was attempting to cross the road when an unidentified vehicle heading towards the Gombe metropolis knocked him down.
DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the Gombe State Police Command, in a statement on Friday said the driver who hit Yunana dead fled the scene of the accident without stopping or offering assistance to the victim.
Abdullahi stated that the police man was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where he was pronounced dead around 6:50 p.m also on Wednesday.
“The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for an autopsy,” Abdullahi said.
Also, according to Abdullahi, the Gombe State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident and is working to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
“The police is appealing to the public for any information that will aid in identifying the vehicle involved in the fatal accident,” he pleaded.
