Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, has said that a threat against Peter Obi is a threat against ‘all of us’.
Atiku said this on Tuesday via a post on his official X account, in support of Obi, the presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP) during the 2023 general elections.
Governor Monday Okpebolo last week declared Obi persona non grata in Edo State, saying the LP chieftain needs to call him before visiting otherwise, his security wouldn’t be guaranteed.
Reacting, Atiku wrote on X: “Let it be known that a threat against Peter Obi or any of us is a threat against ALL of us.”
Earlier this week, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) berated Governor Okpebolo for his statement on Obi paying a visit to Edo State without prior announcement.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC in a post on his official X account on Saturday said Okpebolo’s statement about Obi is as disgraceful as it is undemocratic.
Abdullahi argued that Edo is a state in Nigeria, while Obi is a free citizen and does not need the governor’s clearance to visit Nigerians in their own country.
“Governor Okpebolo’s statement betrays deep insecurity. When a Governor panics over courtesy visits and modest donations, it is a clear sign that something is deeply wrong somewhere,” he said.
According to Abdullahi, leaders who have served the people well will not be bothered when others receive applause.
He added that perhaps, the people celebrating Obi are simply reminding the Edo State Governor the kind of leader he should be.
