Troops arrest suspected gunrunner in Taraba

Troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, have apprehended a suspected gunrunner and recovered several weapons in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The arrest took place on February 12 following credible intelligence, prompting troops at the Forward Operating Base, Wukari, to act swiftly.

According to Umar Muhammad, acting assistant director, Army Public Relations 6 Brigade, the 48-year-old suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim from Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, was detained during the operation.

A search led to the recovery of six PKT machine guns, two 7.62mm special ammunition rounds, a Peugeot 504 vehicle, a Q Seven mobile phone, cash of ₦170,000, seven bottles and wraps of perfume, and two small containers of Vaseline.

The Army said the operation denied criminal elements the chance to distribute illegal weapons in the state, contributing to efforts to curb insecurity.

Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, commended the troops for their professionalism and swift response, urging them to maintain operational vigilance.

The Commander also appreciated local residents for providing timely intelligence, which supported the success of the operation.

According to him, the Brigade remains committed to protecting lives, restoring peace, and ensuring public safety across Taraba State.
