A female security officer has died after she was struck by an operational vehicle of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
Afolabi Babawale, spokesperson of the corps, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview on Saturday.
The identity of the deceased officer had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment the accident occurred during what appeared to be a coordinated show-of-force drill.
In the footage, the officer was knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle that was making a turn as part of the exercise.
The vehicle later came to a stop, drawing an immediate response from colleagues and bystanders who rushed to lift it and pull her out.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and evacuated her from the scene.
Confirming her death, Babawale said the NSCDC had initiated internal procedures following the incident.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He added that a comprehensive statement would be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and outline the steps being taken by the agency.
