Monterosa Construction Limited Lekki site has been sealed by the Lagos State Safety Commission following the death of a worker, Rotimi Adesina, who was fatally injured in a crane accident.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday while Adesina, believed to be the crane operator, was working on the site. He was rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase One but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Lanre Mojola, Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, said the site had been sealed and an abatement notice issued to prevent further accidents pending the outcome of a full investigation.
The statement, signed by the Commission’s spokesperson Adewunmi Okoh, read in part: “The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed the Monterosa Construction site following a serious crane incident that occurred at the site involving crane operations at 7:30 a.m.
Preliminary investigation from officials of the commission who promptly arrived at the site reveals that the crane operator, one Mr. Rotimi Adesina, sustained fatal injuries during the incident and was transported to the Evercare Hospital, Lekki Phase 1, where he later died.”
The commission disclosed that the site’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer was unavailable for immediate questioning, as he was attending to the injured operator at the time of the incident.
“The Project Manager, Hein Coerzer, and the Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, were engaged on account of the incident and disclosed that all relevant documents related to the crane were kept at the company’s head office,” the statement added.
The company was directed to submit all necessary documents related to the crane and the site’s overall operation for review.
Mojola stressed the importance of compliance with safety protocols:
“Safety of lives is key, and on no account should safety precautionary measures be compromised.”
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to enforcing safety regulations to prevent further tragedies.
Adesina’s death is the latest in a series of workplace fatalities recorded in Lagos.
In October 2024, Olalekan Oloruntoba, another crane operator, was crushed to death at a Julius Berger construction yard in Ijora. The Safety Commission launched an investigation and sanctioned the firm, directing it to comply with specific regulatory requirements.
