The Federal Ministry of Health has warned Nigerians and the public in general against the misuse of antibiotics.
The Ministry of Health issued the warning via a post on its official X account on Wednesday night, saying that antibiotics are not for every cough or catarrh.
“This week on #HealthyNaija, we are saying it loud: “Safe Meds: Stop Antibiotic Resistance. Did you know misusing antibiotics makes infections stronger and harder to treat?,” the ministry wrote on X.
According to the statement, members of the public should never self-medicate or stop halfway, while urging them to finish their prescribed dose.
The ministry also called on the public to report fake or suspicious drugs to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Nigerian federal agency responsible for regulating and controlling the manufacture, importation, exportation, advertisement, distribution, sale, and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals and packaged water.
“And remember: prevention is better than prescription—wash those hands! Let’s Get It Right, Naija! Misusing antibiotics today means tomorrow’s infections could become deadly,” the Ministry of Health warns.
“Let us protect ourselves, our families and future generations.Use medications wisely. Stop resistance before it starts.”
