The United States Mission in Nigeria has highlighted a report which accused state governors of spending billions on luxury government houses amid President Bola Tinubu’s call for sacrifice.
The US Mission in Nigeria highlighted the report on Tuesday, referencing the large expenditures by some state governors despite the country’s economic difficulties.
The report, titled “Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses,” was published by The Africa Report, an online media outlet.
According to the report, while President Tinubu has beckoned on Nigerians to endure economic hardship resulting from his policies since assuming office on May 29, 2023, State governors appear not to be making similar sacrifices.
“While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class,” the report read in part.
The publication cited specific examples, such as Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor’s approval of N63.4 billion for the renovation of the Government House.
The Africa Report described the facility renovated by Governor Makinde in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as an embarrassment and unbefitting.
“In Gombe State, Governor Inuwa Yahaya allocated N14.9 billion for constructing a new ultra-modern residence and another N14.23 billion for the House of Assembly complex,” the report read.
The US Mission in Nigeria on its official X account shared the report and included comments from transparency and accountability advocacy groups.
“Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust,” it stated.
