The accident occurred barely five days after a similar accident, which claimed six lives, happened between Otuan and Ayama axis of the same Southern Ijaw LGA on Saturday.

The state Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union, Ipigansi Ogoniba, who confirmed the latest accident, said it involved a local boat and a speedboat.

“It occurred at Oyoma near Oporoma and eight people died. One of the boats, the local boat, stopped and the other one hit it,” he added.

The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area confirmed the tragedy.
