Some of the suspects arrested in connection with the deadly June attack on the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State will be arraigned on Monday, February 2.

The suspects will appear before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice assured Nigerians that justice would be served, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and properties as enshrined in the constitution.

The statement, issued by Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Assistant to the Attorney General, reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government would not tolerate criminal activities under any guise.

The tragic attack occurred in June when gunmen stormed Yelwata, killing many and displacing several families.

Following the incident, security operatives launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

President Tinubu, during his visit to Benue after the attack, urged security forces to swiftly apprehend those responsible, saying, “Police, I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be an arrest of those criminals.”

He also called on security chiefs to enhance their intelligence networks, ensuring that such incidents would not repeat.

Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue State also renewed his call for the establishment of state police, emphasizing its necessity in resolving the ongoing crisis in the state, which is a major food producer.

He further suggested creating an intervention fund to assist the affected communities.

The arraignment marks a significant step toward justice for the victims and sends a clear message to those who seek to harm the people of Nigeria that their actions will not go unpunished.
