The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has assured customers in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states of improved electricity supply.
It stated that blackout and frequent interruptions will reduce significantly by 2027.
The Disco said the improvement would come as it strengthens infrastructure and prepares to benefit from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company’s 350-megawatt gas plant in Gwagwalada expected to boost supply by late 2026 or early 2027.
Chijioke Okwuokenye, officer of AEDC said the company was already working to improve reliability, including the construction of a new feeder line to Wuse aimed at ensuring customers receive at least 20 hours of daily electricity supply.
He said, “we are increasingly power reliable. We are constructing a new feeder to Wuse from the second week of March for customers in Wuse to experience at least 20 hours of power supply. Same with Idu.
“It may sound like a tall order, but it is possible; we have the support of our board, shareholders and the government. By this time next year, this huge impact in terms of power drop will be a thing of the past.
“By this time next year we will not be affected by the drop in power supply from the National Grid,” he said.
He added that with ongoing improvements and support from stakeholders, power supply challenges would reduce significantly within a year.
Okwuokenye attributed the recent decline in electricity supply nationwide to reduced allocation caused by seasonal challenges affecting generation.
He also identified energy theft as a major challenge affecting distribution companies and urged electricity consumers to cooperate in curbing the menace.
The AEDC boss further called for a review of the current electricity tariff structure to address the liquidity crisis in the power sector.
He noted that the company had deployed about 70,000 meters under the federal government’s free metering scheme.
