The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed by the national assembly, describing it as a “treacherous betrayal” of Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Ini Ememobong, the national publicity secretary, the opposition party accused federal lawmakers of undermining transparency by removing mandatory electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The PDP argued that Nigerians had clearly demanded real-time electronic transmission to safeguard electoral credibility, adding that weakening such provisions raises suspicions about the integrity of future elections.
According to the party, altering transparency measures ahead of polls sends a troubling signal and contradicts the wishes of the electorate.
It also criticised what it called inconsistencies in the position of the ruling All Progressives Congress, noting that the party once championed electoral technology reforms.
The PDP further faulted the bill’s reported restriction of party primaries to direct and consensus methods, describing it as interference in the internal affairs of political parties.
The party insisted that political organisations retain constitutional autonomy over their processes.
Calling on Nigerians, organised labour, and civil society groups to respond through lawful means, the PDP urged lawmakers to reconsider their stance, warning against actions it said could weaken democratic gains.
