President Bola Tinubu has appointed Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as his Presidential Adviser and Coordinator of Livestock Reforms.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made the disclosure on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night.

Jega, who served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, is now tasked with overseeing and coordinating the implementation of livestock reforms aimed at addressing the long-standing farmers-herders conflicts in Nigeria.

This comes after Tinubu’s creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development in July, which was designed to focus on sector-specific solutions for resolving these issues.

Jega, who is also the former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Committee with President Tinubu, which delivered key recommendations for sustainable livestock reforms. One of their major recommendations was the establishment of the Livestock Ministry, which now has an appointed minister.

At 68, Jega holds various academic and advisory positions, including being a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and serving as the pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano State. His appointment aims to continue the momentum of the livestock reforms, reinforcing the work already underway.
