A deadly explosion, reportedly triggered by a locally-made improvised explosive device (IED), has killed six people and injured three others in Gwabro village, located in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, coinciding with the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
According to a local source who spoke to Leadership, the victims were walking from Gwabro to the nearby Zurmuku community when they unknowingly stepped on the device.
Alhaji Garzali Raka, Special Adviser on Security to the Tangaza Local Government Council, confirmed the incident. He noted that the six deceased victims had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
“This is a deeply saddening incident. We are doing all we could to support the injured and maintain security in the area,” he said.
The explosion took place near a security post close to Zurmuku village. It is believed to have been planted by the notorious Lakurawa bandits, a group blamed for ongoing violence in parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States.
Among the injured were three women who suffered serious wounds and were rushed to Tangaza General Hospital for medical care.
Local authorities have urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious movements. Security agencies are also being called upon to strengthen surveillance and intensify counter-insurgency efforts in the region.
