The Lagos State Police Command has explained that the fire incident that occurred at Alaba market in the Ojo area of the state on Friday, was caused by its officers who set shanties on fire.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos police spokesman who provided the information via his Twitter handle on Friday, noted that fire did not gut the market as widely reported.
He explained that the affected shanties were burnt down after criminals were apprehended there, and weapons recovered.
He tweeted, “This is a false narrative! Acting on credible information, police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals and recovered some weapons. The shanties were thereafter set on fire.
“Alaba Int’l Market is NOT on fire!”
