A viral video allegedly showing former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo—popularly known as Tompolo—celebrating his birthday has triggered a storm of public criticism, with Nigerians calling for his arrest for alleged naira abuse.
The footage, posted on X.com Sunday by user Harrison A (@harreceipts), shows Tompolo dancing while someone sprays ₦1,000 notes in front of him during what is believed to be his 54th birthday celebration in April.
According to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended), actions such as spraying, stepping on, or otherwise defacing the naira are punishable offences, attracting fines, imprisonment, or both.
The EFCC has consistently warned against the mutilation of the naira and recently intensified its crackdown on offenders.
In April, the agency secured a six-month jail sentence against crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for naira abuse.
More recently, in May, popular businessman Emeka Okonkwo (a.k.a. E-Money) was arrested over allegations of spraying dollars at a public event. Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo and comedian Ayo Makun (AY) have also been questioned over similar infractions.
In January, billionaire heirs Wahab and Raheem Okoya were invited by the EFCC after being captured on video spraying cash during a music video shoot.
Despite these actions, the appearance of Tompolo in the birthday video has ignited accusations of selective enforcement and bias. Many Nigerians have taken to social media, questioning the EFCC’s consistency.
“Once e reach their Oga and him friends, EFCC go turn EF-Blind-Blind,” tweeted user @NejeebBello.
However, some voices have risen in Tompolo’s defense, arguing that he didn’t spray the money himself. “How is Tompolo mutilating the naira? From the video, he’s just dancing. Abi na Tompolo dey spray the money or na my eye dey pain me?” asked @AD_Oluwaseun001.
As the video continues to circulate widely, public pressure on the EFCC is mounting. Many are watching closely to see whether the agency will act against Tompolo, with some suggesting the decision will be a litmus test for the EFCC’s credibility and fairness.
