The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated multi-sectoral Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs) in six states as part of the response to the ongoing cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) outbreak in the country.

As of the latest update, the death toll from the outbreak has reached 151.

In a situation report released on Sunday, the NCDC confirmed that EOCs have been established in Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto states to manage and mitigate the spread of the disease.

According to the report, as of 23rd March 2025, a total of 1,826 suspected cases, including 151 deaths, have been reported from 23 states, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 8.3%.

The report highlighted that 94% of all suspected cases are concentrated in 10 states: Kebbi (881 cases), Katsina (158), Jigawa (147), Yobe (109), Gombe (47), Sokoto (303), Borno (36), Adamawa (27), Oyo (23), and Bauchi (66).

Additionally, 17 local government areas (LGAs) across nine states have reported more than ten suspected cases during the current CSM season, with notable cases in Gwandu (313), Tambuwal (155), Aleiro (143), Katsina (69), and others.

The report also revealed that between 17th and 23rd March, 315 new suspected cases were reported from Kebbi, Sokoto, and Yobe, with 14 new deaths recorded during this period. Over 60 samples were collected from nine states, including Adamawa, Gombe, Kebbi, and others.

Despite the increase in cases, the NCDC noted a 65% decrease in the number of reported cases in the current week (315) compared to the previous week (418).

The National Multi-Sectoral EOC continues to monitor surveillance activities and coordinate efforts to control the spread of the disease across affected states.
