The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, has come under fire from the Senate even as the upper legislative chamber resolved on Tuesday to probe the controversial return and reinstatement into public service of wanted fugitive, Abdulrasheed Maina.
Coming under a point of order, Sen. Isa Misau (APC, Bauchi) urged the Senate to probe the circumstances surrounding Maina’s return particularly in an administration head strong on the fight against corruption.
The Senate then resolved that the committees on public service, internal affairs, anti-corruption, establishment, and judiciary should determine the circumstances of the return of Maina to the country.
The committee would be adhoc comprising of the Chairmen and vice-chairmen of the relevant committees.
In his contribution, Senator Atai Ali (APC, Kogi) said: “We are looking at this issue from the wrong perspective. We are looking at the symptoms not at the cause. Maina is too small to resume as a director. Someone must have been the one to do it. Maina is no news that he is corrupt but the person that returned Maina is the problem.
“The Minister of Interior said he has no power to have reinstated Maina. We were told it is the Attorney General of the Federation. He keeps writing all sorts of letters. He even wrote for them to withdraw my certificate of return. The issue is who brought Maina to that place. It is the AGF who has a history of writing letters all over the place. The president should tell us what he would do to AGF. We must rise up to condemn the acts of the AGF.”
Senator Bassey Akpan (PDP, Akwa- Ibom) further debated that the senate is not “going to wait for the executive to investigate and bring to book any culprit. AGF also wrote on my own matter. We must take this matter to a logical conclusion.”
