At least 211 people have died in road crashes in the last 10 months in Kwara State.
Frederick Ade Ogidan, the state sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, disclosed this to Daily Trust Saturday at the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims held in Ilorin.
The programme was attended by traditional rulers, special marshals and officials of the Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARTMA) among others.
He said, “The statistics showed that Kwara recorded 284 road crashes from January to October involving 477 vehicles. “211 persons were killed while 933 others were injured. There were 1,679 males, 309 females and 99 children involved in these crashes,” he added.
Earlier in his address, Ogidan said although it could not be eradicated, road crashes could be minimized and fatalities immensely reduced through conscious road safety culture.
“The slogan is support, remember and act, which means all hands must be on deck. We all need to remember the pain crashes have brought to homes and act accordingly to reduce their impacts.
“We, therefore, plead with all road users to embrace road safety culture to attain zero crashes on our roads,” he added.
He called on road users to obey all traffic rules and regulations which include avoiding the use of unsafe tyres, overspeeding, overloading and inadequate maintenance of all means of transportation.
