The National Judicial Council (NJC) has suspended Justice Jane E. Inyang, Justice Inyang Ekwo and Justice Aminu Baffa Aliyu for one-year without pay for various acts of judicial misconduct.
The disciplinary measures were part of key decisions reached at the NJC’s 108th meeting held on April 29–30, 2025, chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
In a statement released Wednesday night by Kemi Ogedengbe, NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, the Council announced that Justice Inyang of the Court of Appeal, Uyo Division, was sanctioned for violating Rule 3(5) of the Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers.
Justice Inyang was found to have issued inappropriate ex parte orders authorizing the sale of Udeme Esset’s petrol station and other assets during the interlocutory stage of a case while presiding over Suit No. FHC/UY/CS/46/2023 at the Federal High Court before her elevation.
Justice Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, was also suspended for one year without pay. In addition, he was placed on the Council’s watch list and barred from elevation for five years.
The NJC found that in Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/184/2021, Justice Ekwo delivered a ruling in a pending application without hearing the parties and ignored a motion to set aside court proceedings conducted in the absence of involved parties—actions which violated Rules 3.1 and 3.3 of the judicial code.
Similarly, Justice Aminu Baffa Aliyu of the Federal High Court, Zamfara Division, was suspended for one year without pay for judicial misconduct. He was also placed on a three-year watch list and barred from elevation.
