The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has declared a nationwide strike starting June 2, in protest against unpaid wage awards and unimplemented salary increases.

Mr. Mustapha Laminu, JUSUN’s National Vice President for the North Central zone, announced the decision in a statement issued Friday in Abuja.

He said judicial workers have not received any part of the one-month wage award already paid to other public servants, and remain owed for five months.

“This action is to protest against the non-payment of five months arrears of wage award, non-implementation of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage and the non-implementation of the 25/35 per cent salary increase,” Laminu said.

He noted that the union had made several attempts to resolve the issue, including a 21-day ultimatum followed by a seven-day notice. He added that a planned strike was previously postponed due to the intervention of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“It is unfortunate that the Judiciary, as an arm of government, is being punished while other arms of government have since been enjoying,” Laminu added.

He alleged that while the Ministry of Finance had released the necessary funds to the Accountant General, the latter had refused to disburse them to judicial workers.

“We will continue this action until and unless the government pays us this money,” he declared.

Laminu also instructed all JUSUN chapter chairmen to ensure full compliance with the strike order.
