Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has announced his return to the position, declaring that he has resumed his duties as the speaker.
Obasa made the announcement on Thursday after returning to the Assembly complex, flanked by police officers and Department of State Services (DSS) agents.
Today marks his first appearance at the Assembly since his impeachment on January 13.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa declared.
Obasa’s return follows reports that his security details were reinstated, while Mojisola Meranda’s were withdrawn.
The former Speaker had broken into the Speaker’s office with armed policemen and touts, escalating the already tense situation at the Assembly.
The crisis began earlier this year when Obasa was impeached over corruption allegations. His removal paved the way for Meranda to become the first female Speaker of the assembly.
However, following intervention by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Meranda has agreed to step down to promote regional fairness and equity.
