Dauda Lawal, Governor of Zamfara State has expressed sorrow over the death of 17 students who lost their lives in an inferno at an Almajiri School in Kaura-Namoda LGA of the state.
The Witness reported that 17 students were confirmed dead and many injured in the fire tragedy which began on Tuesday night.
A statement the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, on Wednesday described the fire incident as highly unfortunate.
“I’m heartbroken by the tragic fire on Tuesday at Makarantar Mallam Ghali, an Almajiri School located in the Kauran Namoda local government area.
“On behalf of the Zamfara State Government, we extend our condolences to the families, the school, and the entire nation as we mourn the loss of these young souls.
“During this time of sorrow, may Almighty Allah provide strength and comfort to the grieving families as they navigate this difficult period. I extend my wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.
“As a responsible government, we would examine the underlying causes of this fire and seek methods to prevent its recurrence in the future.
“We will provide all necessary support and assistance to the victims’ families.”
The incident occurred few days after Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), warned Nigerians to take precautionary measures against fire outbreaks across the country.
Speaking during the church’s February thanksgiving service at the Throne of Grace Parish, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, the revered clergy emphasized the need for vigilance and prayer in the face of potential disasters, including storms and floods.
According to him: “I must share something very urgent,” Pastor Adeboye stated. “At the beginning of this year, one of the prophecies was to pray against fire outbreaks, storms, and floods. We’ve only spent one month, and we’ve already seen the rate of fire incidents across the world. Nigeria is part of the world, and we must be prayerful.”
“Don’t joke with any form of naked fire around you,” he warned. “And farmers, please don’t burn bushes while preparing your farms. Don’t say I didn’t tell you. May the Almighty God answer our prayers and grant our requests,” he said.
