TV personality and crossdresser, Denrele Edun, may have gotten more than he bargained for when he made a surprising claim that he had an affair with late singer, Goldie Harvey, while she was married.
The revelation, which he made during an interview with NeeCeeBosslady Blog went viral on Wednesday, and has triggered a wave of reactions on social media with many commentators attacking him for, according to them, disrespecting the memory of the late singer.
Goldie who died suddenly in, 2013 after returning to Nigeria from Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California, married Andrew Harvey, the engineer based in Malaysia, though this wasn’t widely known until her death.
According to Edun in the said interview, he and the late singer got intimate a couple of times despite knowing she was married.
“I’ve not shared this anywhere but I can as well give the show a small exclusive. My beautiful late friend Goldie. A lot of people just thought we were friends but we did have a few intimate moments,” he said.
“That’s, why I would say I was the driving force. I knew she was married of course. We kept that secret. It was even more than friendship.
“We’d had a few enter-the-corner [moments]. That was why I constantly wanted to see her make things happen.”
“My beautiful late friend, Goldie, many people just thought we were friends,” he said.
“But we did have a few intimate moments; so that is why I will say that I was her driving force.
“I knew she was married, we kept that secret, but we had something more than friendship.
“We entered the corner, which is why I was constantly committed to seeing her shine.”
Reacting to the interview, Nigerians on Twitter berated the entertainer for disrespecting his late friend’s memory.
A user, Dr Rayo Wright, @DrRayoWright, said “Dear Denrele, your allegation that you had an extramarital affair with Goldie is disrespectful.
“Of course, there were suspicions of your ‘besties’ shenanigans. However, harnessing her memory, to deflect from rumours about your sexuality, is a betrayal. Gutter behaviour. Tueh.”
Another commentator, Tonto of Lagos, @Holuwasheun243, said “I just hope Goldie ghost can just flog this Denrele for midnight.”
On her part, PRECIOUS, @Thickerbodii, noted, “Denrele legit used his own mouth to tell us he was sleeping with the late Goldie despite her being married and I am wondering how will her husband feel. Does she have kids if yes DNA TEST is needed.
Also reacting, Chlorpheniramine, @VictorIsrael_, noted that, “Denrele coming to tell the whole world that he slept with his late friend Goldie even while she was married shows how weird some people are. What do we need that much info for? Nothing anybody will tell me, that guy still fantasises sex with her. This one can sleep with a corpse.”
Another user, Bhadoosky, @BhadmusAkeem, said, “Goldie & Andrew Harvey didnt bear children. Let’s just say that’s the only grace Denrele have. Because I can’t imagine what will be going through the mind of the husband looking at their children after watching that interview. He ruined the lady’s legacy with the intimate expoze.”
Describing Edun as insensitive, JessyJackson, @Jessica_Egbedi, wrote, “When i saw Goldie trending (May her beautiful soul continue to rest in peace) i wonder why?… Denrele is still insensitive, can’t you continue to keep it a secret? Is that something you are proud to say, fuck it she was married. Allow her to rest. Total rubbish all he said.”
Also, Radio Presenter, Fola Folayan, @FavouredWoman tweeted, “This was so so so unnecessary. Goldie didn’t deserve this in her death. We didn’t need to know. Nobody needed to know. Nobody!”
Godlie died after returning home to Nigeria from the 2013 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California.
She had complained of a headache and was rushed to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Though there were rumours that she may have used drugs that caused her death, her husband denied that possibility.
An autopsy conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) revealed that the pop star died of “hypertensive heart disease,” which triggered an “intracerebral hemorrhage.”
Goldie, who was 31 at the time of her death, was laid to rest at the Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi, Lagos on February 25, 2013.
