Prof. Usman Yusuf, a former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged fraud.

The Witness reliably gathered that Yusuf whose reign at the NHIS was bedevilled by controversies was arrested by operatives of the anti-graft agency at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday evening.

We gathered that the arrest followed fresh findings by the EFCC that he inflated ICT budget from N4.975 billion to N8.7 billion and approved payments beyond his approval limit while he held sway at NHIS.

H is also alleged to have awarded contracts to family members and cronies without following due process.

Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the former NHIS boss will be arraigned in court on Thursday 30th January, 2025.

Yusuf was sacked by the former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 for alleged mismanagement of N919 million.
