Former Italian midfielder and Chelsea legend Roberto Di Matteo has listed three reasons why his former club should do everything to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
Di Matteo, who listed his reasons in a recent chat with the Mirror, admitted that Chelsea has been struggling for goals in recent times due to a lack of having a natural goal scorer.
He stated that he believes that Osimhen would be a good fit for Chelsea and encouraged the club to sign the striker despite failing in their bid to convince the striker to join the last season following a disagreement over the incentives in the player’s contract.
Chelsea need a prolific striker who will score 25 goals per season
Di Matteo is of the opinion that the top-flight English Premier League Club (EPL) would need a prolific striker like Osimhen, who would score 25 goals per season.
“I still think, though, Chelsea needs a striker who is going to score them 25 goals a season—if you want to win the league or challenge, that’s what you need,” he was quoted by the Mirror.
Nicholas Jackson is not bad but Chelsea can play with two strikers in attack
He is of the opinion that Senegalese striker Nicholas Jackson, who has been struggling in front of goal and has been widely criticised for missing a number of big chances, is not a bad striker, but Chelsea can make do with playing with two strikers, pairing him with Osimhen or Newcastle hitman Alexander Isak.
Di Matteo said, “That’s not a criticism of Jackson, though; I also think another striker would allow you the option to sometimes play with two up front.
“Up front, there are a couple of options you could go for. Alexander Isak at Newcastle—he’s been playing in the Premier League for a while now, so he knows very much what the league is about.
Osimhen is a top striker; he has been linked with Chelsea on a number of occasions
Di Matteo, who currently works as the technical advisor to the South Korean football club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, also argued that Chelsea should ensure to sign Osimhen, who has been linked to the club on a number of occasions, because he is atop striker.
“Then you’ve got Victor Osimhen, who has already been linked with the club before, and he’s a top, top striker. I’d be looking at either of those two (Osimhen or Isak), personally.” He added.
