Dennis Adeniran Adetoye, a Lagos-based businessman has been jailed by a Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has jailed one year  for visa fraud.

The businessman was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Adetoye was apprehended at the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos after submitting forged documents, including an invitation letter from Clarivate Analytics dated April 20, 2018, an introduction letter from the same company dated May 16, 2018, and a falsified Diamond Bank Plc statement of account.

ICPC investigations revealed that Dennis Adeniran Adetoye, falsely claimed to be the regional business lead for Clarivate Analytics and falsely stated that the company would sponsor his trip to the UK in a bid to expedite his UK visa application.

He was later arraigned before Justice R.A. Oshodi at Court 48, Roseline Omotosho Court House, Ikeja, on a two-count charge of receiving property obtained through felony, knowing it was unlawfully acquired.

The charges, filed under Section 13, were punishable under Section 68 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

At his arraignment on March 4, 2025, Adetoye pleaded guilty to both counts and was remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Prison pending his sentencing.

During the sentencing hearing on March 5, 2025, Adetoye’s defense counsel, J.O. Momoh, requested leniency, noting that the defendant was a first-time offender who had since turned a new leaf and started a legitimate textile business.

Justice Oshodi convicted Adetoye and sentenced him to one year in prison for each count or a fine of one million Naira for all counts. The court also mandated that Adetoye sign an affidavit of good conduct, pledging never to engage in any criminal or corrupt activities again.

Additionally, Adetoye’s biometric details will be recorded in the offender’s database managed by the Lagos State Judiciary.
