The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed the principle of party supremacy and unveiled a series of measures aimed at strengthening internal discipline, accountability and institutional growth within the party.
The resolutions were reached during the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and communicated in a statement issued by Osa Director, the national publicity secretary on Sunday.
According to the statement, the NDC is determined to build a strong political institution capable of outlasting individual ambitions and ensuring that elected governments remain accountable to the party.
“The NDC is committed to building the party as a strong and enduring institution, with emphasis on party supremacy,” the statement read.
The party stated that governments elected on its platform must work closely with party structures in making key decisions.
It said, “The programs, policies, and appointments (except personal staff) of all governments elected on the platform of the party must be made in consultation with the party structure.”
Reaffirming the supremacy of the party over personal interests, the NDC stressed that members must align their ambitions and activities with the broader goals of the organisation.
“The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party,” it stated.
As part of efforts to streamline operations and prevent parallel structures, the NEC directed all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations linked to the party to operate under its supervision.
“All affiliated groups and NGOs shall operate under the guidance and control of the party and must not function in parallel with, or independently of, the party structure,” the statement added.
The NEC also approved the development of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates. To facilitate the process, a committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser has been established to develop the framework and implementation guidelines.
In a move aimed at fostering unity within the party, the NDC announced the inauguration of a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging and reconciling aggrieved members.
“A National Reconciliation Committee has been inaugurated to reconcile all aggrieved members of the party,” the statement said.
The party maintained that it was being built as a long-term institution rather than a platform driven by personalities or short-term political interests.
“The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” it stated.
On financial management, the party pledged to enforce transparency and accountability among its officials and candidates.
“On financial probity, the party will enforce strict accountability in the management of party resources by all officers, and party funds must be used strictly for party business,” the statement said.
The NDC further directed that all funds sourced by candidates and contributions made to campaign accounts must be fully disclosed through appropriate party channels to ensure transparency.
The party urged members and aspirants to remain committed to its long-term vision, stressing that loyalty to the party and the national interest must take precedence over personal considerations.
