Ogun State and the Federal Capital Territory recorded the highest number of road accidents in Nigeria during the fourth quarter of 2025.

This is according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The NBS report shows that road accidents remained a major safety concern across the country during the period, contributing to thousands of crashes and more than a thousand fatalities.

According to the report, “Ogun state and F.C.T recorded 237 and 197 crashes in Q4 2025, respectively, followed by Kaduna state (175), Oyo state (174), and Lagos state (141), out of the 2,731 road traffic crashes reported, highlighting persistent road safety concerns across major transport corridors.”

The number of road accidents increased by 12.2 percent from the 2,434 crashes recorded in Q3 2025 and rose by 6.72 percent compared to the 2,559 crashes reported in Q4 2024.

Disaggregated by severity, serious crashes accounted for the highest proportion with 1,775 cases, followed by fatal crashes with 677 cases, while minor crashes recorded the least with 279 cases.

The report also highlighted gender statistics, noting, “during the period under review, 6,561 males were injured, accounting for 75.19 percent of the total injured persons, while 2,165 females were injured, representing 24.81 percent.

“Analysis of fatalities by gender indicates that males accounted for the majority of deaths, with a total of 1,085 males killed, representing 78.97 percent of total fatalities, while 289 females were killed, accounting for 21.03 percent.

“The number of vehicles involved in road traffic crashes stood at 4,059 in Q4 2025, indicating an increase of 9.41 percent compared to the 3,710 vehicles recorded in Q3 2025.”

Regional breakdown revealed the South-West had the highest number of crashes with 763 cases, followed by the North-Central with 744 cases, while the South-South recorded the least with 152 cases.

Regarding casualties, the report stated, “with respect to casualties, the North-Central zone recorded the highest number with 2,649 casualties, followed by the North-West with 2,497 casualties, while the South-South recorded the least with 420 casualties.”

Speed violations were identified as the major factor behind the accidents and fatalities.
