The Manchester United Football Club has appointed Darren Fletcher, its U18s head coach, as interim manager of the first team.

The club confirmed that Fletcher will take charge ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Burnley.

Fletcher, a former club captain and widely regarded as a club legend, steps into the role following the departure of Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was dismissed following a meeting with Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, United’s executives, where he was officially informed.

Amorim leaves Manchester United after 14 months in charge of the club.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the club statement reads.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
