At least 23 women have reportedly been abducted by armed bandits in Moriki town, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency platform covering the Lake Chad region, the women were seized while gathering firewood on the outskirts of the town.”

Citing security sources, the outlet reported that the abduction occurred around 1:30 p.m. on August 2, with the assailants taking the women to an undisclosed location.”

“Troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, in collaboration with local vigilantes and other security agencies, have since launched a search-and-rescue mission,” the report stated.

“Security officials have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to ensure the victims’ safe return and to apprehend those responsible.”

Zamfara has seen a surge in kidnapping cases in recent months.

On July 27, gunmen reportedly killed 33 of 50 abducted victims in Banga town, Kaura Namoda LGA, despite receiving a ₦50 million ransom.

The incident sparked global outrage, with Gill Lever, the United Kingdom’s Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, calling it an ‘unspeakable crime’.
