TikTok, the short-form video platform owned by ByteDance, took down over 3.6 million videos posted by Nigerian users in the first quarter of 2025 for violating its community guidelines.

This was revealed in the platform’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, which showed a sharp increase from the 2.4 million videos removed in the last quarter of 2024—representing a 50 percent rise in takedowns.

According to the report, TikTok achieved a proactive detection rate of 98.4% in Nigeria during the period, meaning most of the violative content was removed before being flagged by users.

Additionally, 92.1% of these videos were taken down within 24 hours of being posted.

In March 2025, TikTok also removed 129 accounts across West Africa linked to covert influence operations, as part of its efforts to maintain platform integrity.

Globally, TikTok removed over 211 million videos in Q1 2025 — a significant jump from 153 million in the previous quarter. Of these, over 184 million videos were removed using automated detection tools.

The platform’s global proactive detection rate climbed to 99%, underscoring improvements in its ability to identify and eliminate harmful content swiftly.

During the same period, TikTok also deleted 44.7 million comments generated by fake accounts, in an intensified crackdown on spam and artificial engagement.

“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement. These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas.

“Despite this, we are steadfast in our commitment to promptly identify and remove any accounts, content, or activities that seek to artificially boost popularity on our platform,” the company stated.
