Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed his readiness to embrace constructive dialogue by engaging stakeholders who kicked against the proposed renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Speaking on Friday at the inauguration of governing councils for five tertiary institutions in the state, Makinde assured that he will welcome constructive criticism in his quest to rename The Polytechnic after the late former governor of the old Western Region, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo
At the event, held in Ibadan, the governor also signed into law the renaming of The Oke Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, to Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic.
Makinde reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to the development of tertiary education in the state. He assured that adequate financial, material, and human resources would be provided to ensure progress across the institutions.
Makinde stated that the decision to rename some institutions was aimed at recognising and honouring individuals who had made significant contributions to the state’s growth and development. He cautioned students against unnecessary agitation and protests, urging them to seek dialogue when issues arise.
The governor urged the newly inaugurated governing council members and administrators of the affected institutions to carry out their duties with diligence and integrity. He also used the opportunity to appreciate the support his administration has continued to enjoy from labour unions since he assumed office.
Chaired by respected academics and public figures, the governing councils were inaugurated for The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Saki; the College of Agriculture, Igboora; the College of Education, Lanlate; and the Oyo State College of Science and Technology, Eleyele, Ibadan.
Makinde said the reforms in the education sector, including renaming and restructuring, are part of broader efforts to enhance the quality of tertiary education and uphold Oyo State’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
