The Lagos State Government has officially kicked off the reconstruction of the Lagos Theatre in Oregun, Ikeja, as part of its ongoing efforts to bolster the state’s creative and entertainment sector.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held in Oregun, Ikeja, marked a significant step in the administration’s commitment to revitalizing public infrastructure and expanding cultural opportunities for the people of Lagos.

The Oregun Theatre, a public asset destroyed during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, is now set to be fully restored. The state government has launched an extensive redevelopment plan to transform the venue into a world-class cultural and artistic hub, aimed at elevating Lagos’ standing in the creative and entertainment industries.

During the ceremony, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Honorable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, highlighted the project’s importance, stating that the new theatre would offer a modern, dynamic space for artistic performances, cultural events, and creative exhibitions.

“We are committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a center for talent development and entertainment in Lagos,” said Benson-Awoyinka.

She also emphasized the need for public involvement and a collective responsibility in protecting public infrastructure, urging citizens to take pride in preserving these shared spaces. “When public assets meant for the people are destroyed, it often stems from a lack of awareness and responsibility. We must change this mindset and foster a sense of community ownership and protection for our cultural heritage,” she said.

The project has been awarded to Mrs. Ayo Jaiyesimi, CEO of Thespian Family Theatre and Productions, whose firm will oversee the redevelopment. Benson-Awoyinka assured that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture would work closely with all relevant bodies, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, to ensure a smooth and timely execution of the project.

The Commissioner also praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, recognizing his leadership in making the project possible and his continued investment in the creative sector.

Arc. Adebayo Odusanya, representing the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Works, expressed strong support for the initiative. He highlighted how the redevelopment aligns with the government’s broader vision for infrastructural and cultural development. Arc. Tunde Yakub, a Director from the Office, assured that the Office of Works would provide technical oversight and ensure the project meets the highest standards.

Mrs. Ayo Jaiyesimi, the project consultant, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the success of the reconstruction. She assured all parties that efforts would be expedited to complete the project within the tenure of Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“The revamped theatre will not only restore a vital cultural landmark but also serve as a major boost to Lagos’ creative economy,” Jaiyesimi affirmed.

The Lagos Theatre, Oregun, once completed, will align with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, which focuses on tourism, entertainment, and the creative economy. The new facility will serve as a beacon of artistic excellence, providing a platform for creative professionals and solidifying Lagos’ status as the cultural capital of Nigeria.

The event was attended by prominent officials, including Mr. Wale Musa, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transportation and Supervising Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture; Mr. Idowu Johnson, CEO of the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture; and other key government representatives, cultural leaders, and creative industry stakeholders.
