Ibierembo Evelyn Thompson, the commissioner for Transport, Logistics, and Stores at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has resigned.

Thompson’s resignation, dated March 9, 2025, follows the recent Supreme Court ruling that annulled the October 5, 2024, Local Government Council elections in Rivers State. She cited the judgment as the primary reason for her departure.

In her resignation letter, Thompson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and wished the Commission well in its future endeavors.

Her resignation comes amid escalating political tensions in the state.

The ongoing crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has deepened, with the Assembly members demanding urgent action from the Governor.

The Assembly members, many of whom are loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, has also issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the RSIEC chairman to appear before them to provide clarity on the annulled local government elections and other outstanding matters.

The resignation of Thompson adds another layer of complexity to the situation, as the RSIEC is now at the center of both legal and political scrutiny.
