Tragedy struck on Saturday in Enugu when a petrol tanker exploded along the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu -Onitsha Expressway, killing at least 15 people, including three children.
The tragedy occurred around 11:30 a.m. when a fuel-laden tanker reportedly overturned while navigating the hilly and busy expressway. The resulting explosion sparked a massive fire, which engulfed another petrol tanker and six other vehicles, causing widespread devastation.
Eyewitnesses described the blast as catastrophic, with victims, some of whom were fleeing the scene, caught in the inferno. Many were burned beyond recognition, making identification difficult.
Rescue operations were severely hampered by the intensity of the blaze, preventing bystanders and emergency responders from accessing the site promptly.
