Tony Elumelu, Chairman of the United Bank of Africa (UBA), through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, has donated 1,800 bags of rice to the people of Onicha Uku community, in Aniocha- North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking last Sunday, at his hometown in Onicha-Uku, Elumelu, who was represented by the Head of Media and External Relations, UBA, Nasir Ramon, said the gesture aims to celebrate the spirit of Christmas—a season of love, kindness, and generosity.
Ramon said it was a special and remarkable gesture of giving back by “one of our own, an icon of excellence, philanthropy by a son of the soil who has remained steadfast in his commitment to empowering communities and changing lives.”
He described the event as a testament to the deep commitment of the Tony Elumelu Foundation to his roots, his people, and his vision for a better and brighter future for all.
“He has not only made an indelible mark on the global stage but continues to impact lives right here in his hometown”, he said.
Ramon appreciated community elders and spiritual leaders for their contribution to the peace and safety of the community.
”Today’s event is about sharing, caring, and ensuring that no table is left without the joy of Christmas. The distribution of rice is a simple but profound gesture of love—a way of ensuring that families in this community enjoy the festive season with dignity and happiness. This initiative reflects the values Elumelu embodies—hard work, generosity, and the unshakeable belief that when we lift others, we rise together”, he asserted.
He urged well-meaning members of society to embrace the yuletide as a means to give back to their respective communities, saying that this season reminds us that giving back, no matter how small, makes the world a better place.
“As we receive these gifts today, let us also commit to being a blessing to others in whatever way we can. We encourage everyone to embrace this spirit of giving and unity, not just during Christmas but in our everyday lives. Now, without further ado, it is my great honour to invite the man of the moment, a leader, a philanthropist, and a source of inspiration”, he said.
In his closing remarks, he lauded those who made the event a success and urged community members to continue supporting one another.
