The Bayelsa State government has directed all primary and secondary schools in the state to embark on a six-week flood break.
The directive was issued to protect students against the adverse effect of flooding.
A task force was established by the Governor Duoye Diri’s administration in addition to ordering the closure of all primary and secondary schools to identify high grounds where flood victims could relocate while the state’s closed water canals were being opened to lessen the effects of the flood.
Flooding has occurred in many coastal and non-coastal areas of the country in recent weeks as a result of excessive floods and inflow from external sources such as Cameroon.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), devastating floods in Nigeria killed over 300 people in 2022.
