A 14-year-old secondary school student, identified as Nicknes Ayo, has tragically taken her own life after being pressured by her mother to reveal the identity of the man responsible for her pregnancy.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Egba, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

A neighbor, who introduced herself as Mama Enyi, told our correspondent via phone that the girl, who had been schooling in Otukpo, returned home on Thursday showing signs of pregnancy.

“Her mother, noticing signs of pregnancy, asked her if she was pregnant. After much pressure and a threat to take her to a local clinic, the girl ran away,” Mama Enyi explained.

“She was later found in her room after ingesting a substance believed to be Gammalin. She was rushed to the ‘Ghana Clinic’ in the village for medical attention.”

Dr. Oyaje Sule, the medical director of the clinic, also known as Dr. Ghana, confirmed that the girl was brought to the clinic on Saturday morning.

“It is true, they brought a 14-year-old girl to my clinic this morning. It was suspected she had ingested Gammalin after her mother pressured her to disclose who was responsible for her pregnancy,” Dr. Sule said.

“As the situation worsened, I referred her to the hospital in Obagaji, the headquarters of Agatu Local Government.  Unfortunately, she lost her father a few years ago.

Similarly, Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for the State Command, did not pick up her phone when contacted.
